To help advocate for World Arthritis Day 2020 (12th of October), we thought it would be a great idea to answer some of the most commonly asked questions surrounding arthritis. We also have a 10% discount code you can use when buying Tenura products through our website.
Can Arthritis be Cured? / Can Arthritis be Treated?
Currently, a cure is not known for arthritis. However, there are many treatments available that can decelerate and help minimise the pain and other symptoms surrounding arthritis. If you believe you or someone you know has arthritis, seek a doctor’s advice immediately.
To treat arthritis, you can use prescribed medication. There are some lifestyle changes you can make too, such as spending more time in the sun, as Vitamin D helps maintain healthy bones and allows the autoimmune system to work correctly. Sunshine is especially helpful for those with rheumatoid arthritis which is often caused by an autoimmune response in the body. You can read more about this in our "Activities in the Sun for People with Arthritis" blog.
There are various operations doctors can perform depending on the type of arthritis and its severity, with the well-known being, joint replacement surgery. During this surgery, a prosthetic joint replaces an arthritic joint.
Can Arthritis Spread?
Rheumatoid arthritis is currently perceived to spread via a person’s blood vessels. If a person has rheumatoid arthritis their arthritic joint releases synovial cells contained in the synovial sac (the sac lubricate joints to avoid friction and wear), these cells travel around the body, affecting other joints-according to a study at the Kerckhoff-Clinic, Germany.
Unlike rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis does not spread through the body. Due to this, a person with osteoarthritis may overcompensate, heavily using other joints to remain balanced and mobile. Overcompensating can cause those other joints to have excess stress put through them, which can be damaging, and this is why it is crucial to seek a doctor’s advice as soon as symptoms of arthritis occur.
What does Arthritis Look Like?
Arthritis can cause edema (swelling) in the affected areas, along with red-ish skin. In acute cases, joints are misshapen, so much so, the affected area takes on a new shape resulting in a crooked finger or toe. Knobbly abscesses can contribute to the malformed appearance, these abscesses are the body trying to protect itself, as the joints wear down, the body attempts to regrow the bone, and it doesn’t always grow in the shape it once was. Another indication of arthritis is small mucous cysts that develop on the hands.
What does Arthritis Feel Like?
Initially, it is said to feel achy, similar to a burning sensation which comes and goes depending on your activity level. In the later stages, the pain tends not to subside and remains in the affected joints. Around affected joints, the skin may be warm to the touch due to inflammation caused by irritated joints. Joints tend to become stiff and seize up, which is why the NHS recommends exercise.

Non-slip coasters and anti-slip mats provide a place to rest things such as mugs and plates, the silicone grips onto the objects which keeps them held in position. A person with arthritis may find these anti-slip mats to be helpful, as you can use them in conjunction with the silicone jar and bottle openers to open containers with one hand, allowing you to use the less arthritic hand.
Tenura Silicone Jar and Bottle Opener
Jar and bottle openers enable you to open containers with ease. Tenura silicone has grip-enhancing properties that allow you to get a firm grasp of lids. For a person living with arthritis, these openers can be a great help as pain, swelling, or other flare-up symptoms can make objects a struggle to hold.
Tenura Silicone Cutlery Grips
Arthritis can cause reduced movement in your hands and fingers that makes holding onto cutlery difficult. By sliding Tenura cutlery grips onto utensils, you no longer require the full motion used to clutch cutlery as the surface area is now greater.
Create bespoke arthritis aids using Tenura grip strips or rolls. You can cut Tenura silicone down to the size and shape required. Many of our customers who live with arthritis use the grip strips around handles of cupboards, pans, DIY and gardening tools, to mention a few. Tenura silicone is both a non-slip material and grip-enhancing, which is why it is perfect for use on handles, you can get a firm hold without the risk of things slipping out of your hands.
All the products listed above are made from Tenura silicone, which means they are:
- Antimicrobial (prevents bacteria harbouring)
- Washable by hand or dishwasher (withstanding temperatures up to 250°C)

Occupational Therapy Day will take place on the 27th of October 2020; it's an internationally recognised observance day that highlights the importance of hard work but also mental and physical wellbeing. This event celebrates the outstanding work of occupational therapists globally through their efforts to re-train and develop the human brain.
Tenura wants to say thank you to Occupational Therapists, and therefore, we are offering a 15% discount on the Tenura Kitchen Pack, an OT essential. Type in the discount code OTD15 at checkout.
What is Occupational Therapy?
A form of healthcare, occupational therapy (OT), is about rehabilitation via training and therapy; these techniques help patients attain the skills necessary for everyday life and to renter the workplace. Often a person requires OT if they have a physical or mental problem (impairment may be better than ‘problem’) that is currently impacting their life/ability to work.
The role of an occupational therapist is vast and includes developing everyday skills, like:
- Motor Skills (The action/movement of muscles – to walk, stand and balance)
- Life Skills (Cooking, cleaning and getting dressed)
- Social Skills (Handling rejection, rewards, and social interactions positively)
- Cognitive Skills (Problem-solving, decision making, and other brain-based skills)
- Coordination (Minimises the risk of injury while also promoting exercise)
People of all ages can seek an occupational therapist for several reasons. A person may need the help of an OT for help regarding birth injuries or defects, sensory processing disorders, autism, rheumatoid arthritis, and other such physical or cognitive difficulties.
To help patients, an OT may suggest you purchase certain types of occupational therapy equipment for the home. At Tenura, we have many home aids that can be beneficial to patients, for instance, the Tenura kitchen pack. Occupational therapy equipment for the home can range from small gadgets that help with menial tasks such as opening a jar, to larger disability aids such as grabrails and adaptive technology.
What is an Observance Day?
Observance days, also known as awareness days, are scattered throughout the year. United Nations General Assembly is one of a few organisations that creates the calendar, taking into account recent and historical events that need national or even global humanitarian reflection. We can all learn from our mistakes and successes for a positive future.
How Can you Participate in Occupation Therapy Day?
You can register to participate in the International Day of Occupational Therapy by arranging a volunteering activity. Over the years, there have been many ways to experience World OT day, including setting up information stands, television appeals, social media campaigns, all to spread the OT message. This year's message is to "Reimagine Doing" which reflects the actions OT community as they help and reimagine the best ways to assist the people in society who need it most.

Videos are a great way to showcase products, which is why we have teamed up once again with MegMazeMedia to produce our latest installment, the Jar and Bottle Opener video. In this video, we explore uses for Tenura jar and bottle openers, you know, besides opening containers.
Sit, back, relax, and enjoy the show.
As you can see at the start of this video, Tenura jar and bottle openers are in our eco-friendly packaging, an initiative we are pushing across the whole Tenura daily living aid range.
We manufacture Tenura jar, and bottle openers from 100% antimicrobial silicone, which gives Tenura silicone many advantageous properties. Their primary use is likely within a kitchen, to open tricky jars and containers, which is why they are antimicrobial, meaning bacteria and germs can’t harbour on the surface, which is fundamental in areas that require a high level of hygiene. Another terrific benefit that follows on from them being antimicrobial is that no cost-saving additives such as phthalate plasticisers are in their construction, meaning they are also non-toxic.
For people living with conditions such as arthritis that can result in weakened hand strength, Tenura jar and bottle openers can be a simple yet effective daily tool. Their compact size means you can take them to your workplace or a restaurant, wherever you may need this helpful gadget.
Tenura Jar Openers
Jar Openers have many great uses. From the video, you can see they work well when turning doorknobs or other large containers that can be slippery or tough to open. Tenura silicone jar openers allow you to gain purchase on smooth surfaces. The following were excellent examples in the video:
- Twisting Doorknobs
- Opening Jars
- Opening large containers with twist-off caps
Tenura Bottle Openers
For smaller containers/objects, Tenura offers the silicone bottle opener. Having a smaller version of the jar opener can help you gain purchase on items like bottle tops. In the video, we explore some great uses for this Tenura product:
- Opening milk bottles
- Turning taps
- Opening pill bottles
- Opening small containers with twist-off caps
We hope you enjoyed watching Tenura’s video. You can see more of our product videos via our YouTube channel. Let us know in the YouTube comments section any innovative uses you have used your Tenura jar and bottle openers for, we hope to hear from you soon.
Cleaning a surface with IPA cleaner before applying Tenura bathroom stickers is the correct procedure to ensure long-lasting performance. Using our experience and knowledge gained from working within the industry since 1997, we have invaluable information to pass down to our loyal customer base, yes, that's right, you! In this blog post, we explain why IPA cleaner is essential when applying Tenura bath stickers.
What is IPA cleaner?
IPA cleaner, also known as Isopropyl Alcohol, is a disinfectant cleaner often used in medical environments. In our industry, we use it to remove grease and dirt from a surface before application. There are two variants, 70% and 99% IPA. Both are suitable for the application of Tenura non slip bath stickers.
Each has its uses; for instance, 99% IPA is fantastic for cleansing electronics due to its higher volume of alcohol, which evaporates quickly, avoiding damage to water sensitive components. 70% IPA cleaner contains 30% water. Research suggests that it is a better disinfectant, which is based upon the fact that water is a catalyst (accelerator) in this equation, the additional 29% water means the solution evaporates at a slower rate. Due to this, the solution remains on the surface for longer, destroying the growth of microorganisms.
How does IPA cleaner work?
IPA cleaner dissolves acids from the surface and with usual cleaning methods can remove contaminants such as dirt, grease and oil. These contaminants prevent anti slip bathroom stickers adhering to surfaces, in this case, bathtubs or shower trays.
Why use IPA cleaner?
Many people use cream-based cleaners to clean their bathtubs or shower trays. The main reason for non slip bathroom stickers failing is the use of cream-based cleaners before application. Cream-based cleaners often leave a powdery residue, which prevents the bathroom stickers adhesive from effectively bonding to the surface, causing them to fail. Using IPA cleaner correctly removes all contaminants from a surface, allowing the adhesive to achieve a strong bond. This is why IPA cleaner is the perfect choice for use in the application of anti-slip bath stickers.
Where can I buy IPA cleaner for bath sticker application?
There are many online shops where you can order IPA cleaner. We have rounded up top retailers selling IPA cleaner under £10!
|Ebay||£3.99||99.9%||50ml||Miniature Spray Bottle|
|Cheap Franking Supplies||£4.99||99.9%||N/A||Wipes (5)|
|Amazon||£9.99||99.9%||500ml||Twist Cap Solution|
As you can see above, there are many forms of IPA cleaner, choose one that you are comfortable using. There are a few quantities to choose from as IPA cleaner has many uses, so this purchase is not solely for Tenura anti slip bath stickers. For instance, you can disinfect many surfaces in your home as it is safe to use on plastics and glass, which is crucial during this current pandemic.
How can I use IPA cleaner safely?
- You must make sure the room is well ventilated. It is essential as IPA cleaner contains alcohol, which gives off fumes that can be toxic. Ensure the room is ventilated, by opening windows and doors, allowing fresh air to enter.
- Please also note it is incredibly flammable due to the concentration of alcohol, so keep well away from flames, e.g. lit candles in your bathroom.
What are bath stickers?
Anti slip bath stickers are small pre-cut shapes that you can apply to your bathtub or shower to add non-slip properties. Tenura bath stickers are an essential daily living aid in any bathroom and can help everyone gain confidence by having a sure-footing when bathing. Tenura bath stickers come in two shapes (circles and strips) and two colours (transparent and white).
How do I apply anti slip bathroom stickers?
We have an in-depth blog that goes into detail to make sure your bath stickers are applied correctly for ultimate longevity. Read our blog post on "How to Apply Tenura Non Slip Bath Stickers".
IPA cleaner produces the best result, ensuring Tenura bath stickers adhere optimally. Now you know all about Tenuras top tip regarding the application of Tenura bath stickers! What makes Tenura’s Living Aids the best on the market?
The products are made from silicone and are Non-Toxic. These qualities make them great for any food preparation areas like kitchens. When using our Tenura anti-slip mats, the kitchen can be kept more hygienic due to the easy to wipe down the surface of silicone and its antimicrobial properties. It is an essential feature of our products as they are targeted towards children, the disabled, and the elderly who are more vulnerable and less immune to diseases. So, keeping a tidy, clean kitchen is paramount to their health. Another great use of the anti-slip mats includes placing them under chopping boards to avoid unwanted movement, and our anti-slip coasters keep your drink from being knocked over due to the silicones' grippy surface.
We also have been in the industry for over 20 years, so we know our stuff!
What are Tenura’s Daily Living Aids made from, and why?
Tenura’s Daily Living Aid range is 100% silicone, which means that the products are non-toxic (as chemically inert), washable and dishwasher safe. Due to the gripping properties of the silicone, you are less likely to cause spillages or harm to yourself when using these products in conjunction with chopping boards or as a coaster as items placed on the anti-slip mat/coaster will move less compared to an ordinary counterpart.
The anti-slip mats help prevent injury especially if you chose a suitable colour to indicate a message. Many of our customers choose red mats to highlight that the area could be hot and may require extra attention. Our yellow mats tend to be used in conjunction with the message that the products placed on the mats are general items a person doesn’t want to lose. Such things could include glasses or hearing aids. These non slip mats are also the most visible in low light areas. Finally, the blue silicone products lend themselves to bedrooms and living rooms. The colour blue is calming and helps to provide contrast to lighter surfaces like wooden furniture or white tiles. If you like to know more about this, you can read our Highlight Objects & Hazards with Tenura Daily Living Aids blog.
Other great features of our silicone Living Aids is there very high-temperature threshold of 250 °C and the fact they are very difficult to rip/tear. Again, this makes them perfect for the kitchen but also hotter work environments such as working with cars and hot power tools. Place the hot power tools on a red anti-slip mats, which indicates a warning to others that those tools may be hot. It also protects the surface on which the mat has been placed and stops the power tools being knocked over or moved as easily. Use the anti-slip mats in combination with our anti-slip grip strips on your work tools to allow you to complete a task without as much strain on joints. If you are feeling adventurous, you can also apply our Tenura grip strips in medical practices or offices or to door handles, crutches and more, as they are safe to use anywhere.
What makes Tenura’s Daily Living Aids Antimicrobial?
To make our silicone products antimicrobial, we add a small percentage mix of Silver Nitrate. Silver has been used in the medical industry for years and can be found in wound dressings, creams and as a coating on medical devices. The silver used in our silicone products is toxic to bacteria, along with some algae and fungi. However, it is not toxic to us. Making our products fantastic for uses in kitchens, medical practices and for vulnerable people who are prone to diseases. To learn more about this, you can read our blog on how Rubber Bath Toys Are A Haven For Bacteria. It is also worth noting that Tenura’s products do not feature toxic, cost-saving chemicals or substances, like phthalate plasticisers, that are banned or restricted in some parts of the EU and USA.
In accordance with article 58 of the BPR, this article has been treated with a biocidal product. Silver nitrate (CAS 7761-88-8) has been added to create the Antimicrobial properties.

What payment methods do you accept?
There are seven payment methods we accept they are as follows:
Please note that we accept both debit and credit cards for both Visa and Mastercard.
What is non-slip material and how does it work?
It’s complicated. Silicones are synthetic polymers (a long chain of repeated molecules). The bond between the Silicon and the Oxygen is stronger than the Carbon-Carbon bond. Meaning it has stable thermal stability (resistance to mixing), so they are great for environments that are hotter or the organic equivalent (Silicon) would decompose. The properties of the silicone can be changed by substituting organic chemical groups for other chemical groups (such as the methyl group) and cross-linking. This change is what can make silicone properties change. Properties that can be affected are the flexibility, water repellence, and its solubility (dissolvable). Some of these qualities directly correlate to coefficients of friction (levels of grip).

Tenura’s range of anti-slip and grip enhancing products are designed to create independence around the home. With their excellent anti slip qualities, they make day to day tasks easier and more manageable by increasing grip and comfort.
Additionally, their vivid shades of blue, red and yellow allow Tenura daily living aids to stand out and be more noticeable, particularly in environments with more neutral décor. With this feature they can be used to highlight important objects or potential hazards.
The colours can be beneficial in the following ways:
The lightest colour and in times of low lighting or even when it is dark, yellow is the most visible. Tenura products in yellow would be ideal to use at night, such as coasters for glasses of water and yellow mats for essential items such as glasses or hearing aids.
The colour Red commands attention, whether it be for warnings and danger or for something important you didn’t want to miss. Resting pans or dishes that have just come off the stove or out of the oven on a red Tenura mat will help to warn yourselves and others that the pan is still hot, and much like silicone trivets, it will protect the surface while the pan or dish cools. It is safe to do this as Tenura mats are heat resistant up to 250°C.
Blue is a cool, calming colour and due to this is suitable for use in places of rest such as bedrooms and living rooms. As it can provide contrast to lighter wooden furniture, placing items upon them means that it is easier to spot.
Organise the Kitchen with Tenura
Food prepping in the kitchen is key to helping the later processes. Using Tenura daily living aids to organise your prep area, whether it be for organising utensils, prepped food or both, you can create a contrast of colours to help you identify items much quicker. Red mats can also be used to signify sharp knives or electrical items.
The Tenura Grip Strips and Rolls are also ideal kitchen aids. They are available in both blue and red, ideal for adding enhanced grip, but also can be a useful reminder that blue handles are safe, and those that are red could possibly still be hot.
Tenura in the Garden
With plants, furniture and tools a lot of the time being virtually the same colour, easily identifying that trowel you put down can sometimes take longer to find than it should.
Tenura grip strips and rolls can be used to help in these situations by wrapping around tools and handles to enhance grip and make them stand out from the rest of the garden décor. Wrapping the material around tools such as spades will help to make tasks more comfortable too, in addition to the grip increase you will benefit from by using Tenura strips and rolls.
Tenura strips are pre-cut and ready to be wrapped around the object of your choice allowing you a quick, ready to use, grip-enhancing solution. Rolls are available in various sizes, colours and adhesive and non-adhesive versions which increases the application possibilities and they can also be cut to size to suit your needs.

In modern day Life it is virtually impossible to avoid plastic, but with the growing epidemic of plastic pollution it is in our best interests to minimise the amount we use.
Plastics harm the environment by seeping into soil and water, degrading our beaches, killing wildlife, choking our oceans and killing millions of marine animals each year.
There is now a huge campaign to reduce the plastic foot print by governments, environmental groups and worldwide supporters.
We are part of the problem and now need to be part of the solution.
Our problem is that we live in a throw away culture and urgency is needed to move away from this lifestyle involving single usage plastic.
Even If we make little changes in our day to day life, that can help to reduce our own plastic footprint.
Even if we each make little changes in our day to day lives, together they will have a huge impact in reducing the plastic footprint.
Below are a few pointers to go plastic free at home.
Purchase reusable bags made from durable, environmentally-friendly materials that will last time and time again.
Refillable, glass water bottles are much better for the environment and yourself.
Skip a straw or buy a reusable metal one.
local Markets or local farmers markets are ideal for plastic free shopping as most items are displayed loose and stall holders more likely to accommodate your needs. Most food hasn’t travelled miles to get to you therefore the carbon footprint is low.
Buy in Bulk
Reduces the amount of plastic packaging.
Reusable Party Cutlery
The amount of single use partyware we through away in our lifetimes if we thought about it would add up to a considerable amount.
Recycle When Possible
This will give your used packaging the best chance of being disposed of correctly to reduce the pollution created from waste.
The ‘Attenborough Effect’ has sparked a rise in beaches around the UK having a big clean up. With a rise in 18 beaches since last year being awarded for their litter free sands. Over the past 12 months, this movement has led to a 53 percent reduction in single-use plastic.
Large fast-food and coffee franchises such as McDonalds, Nandos and Cost Coffee are leading the way in the eradication of their single-use, plastic straws.
Certain Supermarkets are also taking action to reduce plastic packaging on their products by creating plastic-free aisles so consumers can buy products loosely, or bring their own containers.
The UK has also banned products containing microbeads within the last year.
What Effort is Tenura Making?
Here at Tenura we are making the move from plastic to cardboard packaging, starting with our jar and bottle openers. By 2020, the entire Tenura range will be packaged in cardboard retail boxes.
Cardboard is a very durable material, which allows products to withstand long transportation times. It prevents moisture from accessing goods within the packaging and prevents them from becoming damaged.
Cardboard is biodegradable and recyclable, with it also being more easily and widely recycled than any other material. With it being a lighter packaging, this would also reduce the emissions used when transporting.
For more specific information on our new cardboard packaging, or to place an order, you can contact the Tenura sales team via phone. Alternatively complete our contact us form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
With the summer months arriving and the May Day Bank Holiday weekend around the corner, we hang on to thoughts of backyard BBQs, summer garden parties and picnics in the sun.
You don’t want any distraction from the fun and relaxation of these special times, so why not make use of the Tenura daily living aids range to help make life a little easier on these occasions?
In the warm weather, you need to stay hydrated, but enjoying a little tipple (soft drinks for the kids) is also a welcome treat. Harassment from wasps and flies however is not and is in fact an irritating distraction. Even worse, when wasps get angry for no reason and decide to attack you it often results in a spilled drink. We don’t have a solution for wasps and insects crashing your party, but we can protect your beverages in the form of Tenura CupCaps.
Tenura Cups are stretchable, self-sealing, silicone caps designed to fit over the tops of mugs, cups, cans and glasses. Applying these to your drink container creates a spill proof lid that no bugs can get through. They come with an eyelet in the centre for the insertion of a straw so you can enjoy your drink.
Made from 100% antimicrobial silicone, Tenura CupCaps are completely free from plasticisers, making them non-toxic and suitable for use by all ages. Washable either by hand or dishwasher lends to their durability.
The Tenura CupCaps come in a pack of 2, with each pack containing 6cm and 8cm diameter CupCaps.
Tenura CupCaps can be purchased directly through our website, along with the rest of Tenuras' range of daily living aids. All orders to the value of £50 or more will be sent free of charge within the mainland UK. Should you have any questions or queries about our products, please speak to us via phone and we would be more than happy to help. Alternatively, use the contact us form on the site and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Swiss and American researchers recently released a study stating that bath-time toys, rubber ducks predominantly in this case, become a haven for disease-spreading bacteria.
The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, ETH Zurich and the University of Illinois, counted the microbes found in the murky, stagnant water that resided in some of these bath-time toys. In 4 out of the 5 toys studied, they found that the water squeezed out of them contained “potentially pathogenic bacteria” such as Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterium which is “often implicated in hospital-acquired infection”.
While differences have been found in others, many bath-toys have produced similar results and the reason is down to the material. The plastic materials, with low-quality polymers in them, release carbons that can serve as food for the bacteria. While some of the bacteria is present in the water, bodily fluids, various contaminants and soap are also added. The additional components add microbes and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous and when the bacteria are introduced to this balmy brine and the carbon released from the bath-toys material it creates a formula that produces a haven for bacteria to grow and thrive, so much, so there was a strikingly high number recorded. Up to 75 million cells per square centimetre of a variety of bacteria and fungus. The research had lead to the conclusion that without the carbon produced from the low-quality polymers in the material, this number would have been much less dramatic.
The presence of bacteria is important for the development of a child’s immune system, but too much can lead to infections. The increase of which can be avoided by better quality bath toys that feature higher quality polymers thus preventing the growth and fungus and bacteria.
Tenura Antimicrobial Daily Living Aids
With Tenura for the most part being hand held daily living aids intended for use around food and drink, we too faced similar issues in making sure our products did not subject our users to these risks as well as others.
Initially creating our daily living aids from a non-toxic material, silicone, we removed the need for phthalates to be used in our products to make them pliable enough for their purpose. Phthalates have been used in similar products. It helps to soften cheaper materials to give them a more rubber like finish. The problem with phthalates, is that they are toxic and exposure to them can have long term detrimental health effects. This has resulted in them being banned or restricted in parts of Europe and the USA.
To help combat bacteria the only additive we used is an anti-microbial powder, added during the manufacturing process which prevents the build-up of bacteria and protecting against mould and fungi. This solitary additive is intended to help protect our customers, as well as add value through longevity to our daily living aids.
