Winter Paralympics 2022, are you ready?
This quadrennial event is ready to take place in Beijing this year. It will commence on Friday the 4th to the 13th of March. Channel 4 is where you can tune in to watch the games.
Some Interesting Facts about the Paralympics
The Winter Paralympics debuted in Sweden in 1976, 16 years after the Summer Paralympics started and 80 years after the first modern Olympic games were held.
The United States has the most Paralympic medals to its name, 2,598, of which 919 are gold. The country that has won the most Winter Paralympic medals is Austria, and they’ve won a total of 332 medals, of which 104 were gold.
The mascot for the Winter Paralympic games is a cartoon version of a Chinese lantern, and the design encompasses traditional Chinese paper cutting and Ruyi ornaments. The name of this mascot is Shuey (snow), Rhon (to include, to tolerate), Rhon (to melt, to fuse), 雪容融.The design of the character and name promotes inclusion with the aim of increasing communication between world cultures and the inclusion of people with disabilities.
There are Six Terms to Segment the Athletes:
The classification within the Paralympics can help keep the competition fair and safe as sports can be dangerous. The six segments are as follows:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Intellectual Disability
- Vision Impaired
There are Six Winter Paralympic Sports
Most Winter Paralympic sports are broken down by disability with two main categories; vision impairments and physical impairments.
The Olympics have 15 winter sports, and the Paralympics have 6, and these sports are divided into 2 categories, snow sports and ice sports. Ice sports are played in mixed teams, meaning both men and women compete simultaneously.
The latest of these winter paralympic sports to be sanctioned by the IPC is Snowboarding, first introduced at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games 2014.
In the UK, there are over 50 ice rinks, of which many offer disability assistance to help those with disabilities learn and take up the sport. The UK is certainly making an effort to make snow sports accessible, and it’s thanks to trainers getting additional training to support those with disabilities and the advancements in technology and adaptive equipment.
The Paralympics gets praise for its inclusivity, and rightly so; however, disabled women have only recently been allowed to compete in Para Ice Hockey (2010).
Let’s Explore Some of the Adaptations to these Sports
Sports can be dangerous and challenging, so having adapted equipment to ensure that you are safe and perform at peak performance leads to success. There are many ways to make sports accessible. We are taking a look at how you can adapt preexisting equipment and accessories to make sports more accessible to persons with disabilities.
How to Make Sports More Accessible with Tenura Products
Let’s look at ways Tenura products can help disabled people participate in sports and adapt their equipment for better results and comfort.
Taking On And Off Your Snow Boots
For many snow sports, you will require snow boots, and they can be tricky to take on and off, so we suggest you use a Tenura non-slip floor mat to help. Place the snow boot onto the floor mat to keep it in place whilst you put on the boots. Floor mats help with mobility and increased grip.
Drying Out Your Equipment
Snow melts and causes wet puddles, but thanks to the lattice structure of Tenura non-slip fabric, your equipment will be able to dry out above the water. You can place your boots or skis upon the fabric to help dry and air them out.
CupCaps to Prevent Spillages
If you have had plenty of practice at your snow sport, you may be able to take a drink on the go, and we suggest you use a Tenura CupCap to ensure your drinks container is spillproof.
Adapting your equipment to be more disability-friendly can help when it comes to participating and taking up hobbies in sports. If you have any more ideas, you would like to share. You can do so via our socials (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn).

In this blog, we are rounding up our favourite facts and exploring ways to make sports accessible for those with disabilities.
Some Interesting Facts about the Paralympics
Since 1960, the Paralympic games have been bringing the best-disabled athletes to internationally recognised sporting arenas. Although, before the Paralympics creation, disabled people did and still can compete in the Olympics. The criteria is and always will be to qualify to gain entry.
Paralympians stand up against adversity and have accepted the challenge to overcome their disability and make the most of it. The games and athletes are awe-inspiring, which often leads to a vast uptake in sports globally.
One hundred seventy countries and over four thousand Paralympians are to take part in the Tokyo Paralympics 2021.
There are Six Terms to Segment the Athletes:

- Cerebral Palsy
- Intellectual Disability
- Vision Impaired
- Les Autres/Others
There are 22 Summer Paralympic Sports
There are 22 summer paralympic games for athletes to compete in, with the two newest sports debuting at the Tokyo games, badminton and taekwondo.
Paralympic Only Sporting Events
Above are two Paralympic sports that have no Olympic counterpart, so let's explore them:
Boccia is a mixed-gender turn-taking sport.
Initially, this game was curated with cerebral palsy players in mind. However, now many types of disabled people compete, often those with reduced motor skills.
There are many variants of this game worldwide. For example, in the UK, we have Lawn Bowling, the French have Pétanque, and the Italians have Bocce. They all fall under the umbrella term Boules. You throw/roll your balls as close to the target as possible, and your competitors try to beat your attempt.
One team is red, the other blue, and their target is a white ball.
Goalball, intended to be played by those who are visually impaired/blind. This game sees three participants per team use their hands to throw or roll the ball into the opponent's net, relying on senses other than sight, mainly hearing. Ear-hand coordination is imperative to compete as the ball contains bells inside that players rely on to understand its velocity. Non-disabled players should wear eyepatches and eyeshades to prevent sight. A Goalball game last for 12 minutes a half, 24 minutes in total.
Adapted Technology for Sports
As a disabled person, finding a way into sports of any kind can be tricky, as they aren't always accessible. An example of this is an amputee taking up running. Running is defined as "the activity of going somewhere quickly on foot, as a sport or for pleasure:" - Cambridge Dictionary.
To make this sport accessible to amputees, a universally designed running shoe is not going to help. However, ergonomic adaptive equipment such as running blades can allow an amputee to participate in running events.
How to Make Sports More Accessible with Tenura Products
Let's look at ways Tenura products can help disabled people participate in sports and adapt their equipment further for better results and comfort.
When you are working out and training, you don't want your bottle lid to get between you and that fresh sip of water, so take a Tenura bottle opener to the gym. Tenura bottle openers are made of silicone that's grip-enhancing.
For people with arthritis, twisting and exerting strength through their wrists and hands is tricky and limited, so having this aid is beneficial.
Non-Slip Floor Mats for Mobility
When participating in events as a wheelchair user or someone who uses a walking aid, you may need an extra bit of grip to help you move from one mobility aid to another. For example, in Wheelchair Basketball, there are specially designed wheelchairs for the sport, but getting into one can be a struggle.
By having a Tenura non-slip floor mat under your feet, you can feel secure knowing you have a good foothold and have reduced the risk of slipping when moving between mobility aids.
Non-Slip Strips under Handle Wraps
You can wrap Tenura grip strips around the handle of your golf club, badminton racket or baseball bat and then add your handle wraps. This additional layer adds comfort to the handle as Tenura silicone is soft and cushioning.
For a permanent solution, use Tenura adhesive-backed grip roll, cut it to size and wrap it around the handle of sports equipment.
We can only recommend Tenura grip strips in this application to increase handle surface area and comfort, not grip. Tenura grip strips, like the rest of our silicone range, lose their properties when wet. Use a recommended and approved handle wrap for this application once Tenura grip strips are applied.
Grip Roll for Indoor Cycling & Wheelchair Sports
When practising your cycling indoors on an exercise bike, cut down Tenura grip roll and attach it to the bike's pedals, which will give you an excellent foothold and prevent your feet from sliding off the pedals. This adaptive method can also be applied to cross trainers and other indoor gym equipment.
Note, grip roll and our other silicone products, when wet, lose their non-slip properties.
Experience the same benefits of non-slip pedals by attaching the gripping roll to your wheelchair's footrest for indoor games of Wheelchair Basketball.
Non-Slip Fabric to Stop Saddles and Exercise Mats Sliding
You can use Tenura non-slip fabric to prevent saddles from moving, cut the non-slip material to a suitable size and place it between the saddle pad and saddle. Now, as a rider, you can feel secure in the knowledge that Tenura grip fabric is doing its job and stopping any unwanted movement of the saddle.
Tenura non-slip fabric is also beneficial placed under yoga mats or other exercise mats to prevent them from moving whilst you're completing your exercise. Unwanted movement from your mat during exercise could lead to injury.
Tenura silicone is antimicrobial, perfect for use in areas where you will be around heavily used equipment that is likely carrying many germs and bacteria.
Adapting your equipment to be more disability-friendly can help when participating and taking up hobbies in sports. If you have any more ideas, you would like to share. We would love to hear your thoughts via our socials (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin).

With summer coming up we can’t help but get out for the day and enjoy the sun! However while many of us are constantly on the go all year round for various reasons, some of us find seemingly simple tasks more challenging than others do. If these simple tasks become much more difficult than previous they can have a major detrimental impact on your fun or duties. With this blog post we are going to try and explain a few ways on how Tenura products can help make these everyday tasks easier.
The ranges of select Tenura products below are designed to make various simple tasks on the go feel like a breeze once again.
Tenura Cutlery Grips
Tenura cutlery grips, like the majority of Tenura products are produced from silicone. The main benefits of silicone is how well it grips and the comfort experienced whilst holding it. These features mean that you can take them anywhere with you. For example, if you’re going out for an expensive meal or just want to stop off somewhere for a spot of lunch they are perfect for popping on to your cutlery quickly and easily. This fabric is easy to cut making it easier to carry as you can then only take as much as you need. It has multiple purposes when on the go, it can be used as additional comfort when sitting on a bench whilst relaxing or having a picnic. Due to non-slip fabrics flexibility, it is easy to fold and carry in your bag. You could also find its benefits when having a picnic by using it on the table surface to place your food and drinks on for either a cleaner surface or to make everything less prone to slips. Good Afternoon folks and a happy new year to you all!
With the coming of the new year, we thought about how you use Tenura products and the possibilities of where we could expand them too. One area in particular in working or personal life is full of areas where a robust anti-slip surface or grip is needed is something we have never discussed in detail before, so we thought this was a perfect opportunity to do so.
Grips Aids for Tools for General Maintenance and Repair Work
There are tonnes of tasks in the workplace and home which require the use of spanners, wrenches, screwdrivers, and many other tools, to tighten or loosen parts effectively, and a secure grip can often be necessary. These tasks can become pretty tricky for those with physical impairments or when an incredibly stiff bolt, nut, or screw doesn’t want to budge. We think Tenura anti-slip grip strips and rolls would work flawlessly as grip aids for tools. By using grip strips, or cutting strips from a Tenura anti-slip roll and wrapping these around the handles of tools such as spanners, screwdrivers and pliers, you can dramatically increase the grip and comfort you have on them. This modification makes light work when using tools to twist, turn or lever to get tight or rusted nuts, bolts or screws loose and allows you to continue the maintenance of any machinery or appliance.
Stiff oil caps can also be a nightmare when trying to do routine maintenance on the car at home or in a garage. Without the use of a tool or protective layer, these can be hard to get off by hand. However, we thought about how this cap would fit nicely in our jar openers! By using Tenura jar openers on stiff caps and tops, you can effectively screw them open or closed without any pain or discomfort. Tenura silicone has grip-enhancing properties helping you to grip caps to remove them without putting stress and strain through your joints and muscles. Tenura jar openers are also very resistant to heat, allowing them to withstand temperatures of up to 250°C, making them ideal for use on warm or hot car parts.
Tenura Non-Slip Fabric for Kneeling/Support
Kneeling on hard surfaces, while not only extremely uncomfortable to the point of being painful, could potentially cause long term damage to your knees. Tenura non-slip fabric is an ideal way to prevent this. By doubling over Tenura non-slip fabric, it will provide a comfortable cushion for you to work on without the worry of potential long term damage to your knees. Tenura’s non-slip material is not only soft but non-slip, so it will not move when you do in most cases and will keep your tools in position until you need them. It also raises them from the floor and keeps them away from deep puddles of water, oil, or any other liquids. Non-slip material is also perfect when lying on the floor during maintenance to increase comfort and help extend the time you can spend working in a horizontal position. Tenura non-slip fabric, in most cases, is also easily washed, meaning it can be used again and again without the danger of contamination.
By using the Tenura jar opener as well as Tenura grip strips and non-slip roll and non-slip fabric, you can carry out car maintenance more comfortably and efficiently. You can make tasks in all areas of life much more convenient, and prevent potential damage and injury at the same time.
You can view and purchase Tenura’s range of products directly through the website. Spend £50 on our website, and we will ship your order free of charge to anywhere within the mainland UK.
Tenura non-slip fabric offers a soft and comfortable anti-slip surface, which is useful in many areas around the home, such as on kitchen worktops, the dinner table and under rugs and carpet, to prevent movement. Electricians, mechanics, daring DIY experts and any other professional tradesmen or women who require specialist tools but don’t want them moving around, potentially becoming damaged or lost, can also benefit from the use of non-slip fabric.
Recently, a very clever lady who works alongside us at Tenura came up with a brilliant idea. When driving in general, unless your boot is very small or pretty full, things will always slip, slide, and bang around. The moving objects may cause damage and spillages as well as be very distracting and startling when you are trying to concentrate on the road and other drivers. Tenura anti-slip fabric will help prevent this by allowing objects to sink into the material, enabling the material to form a non-slip grip around the base of the item. Tenura anti-slip fabric helps to prevent objects from sliding around the boot or bumping into others, causing possible damage.
Anti-slip fabric is a durable material that possesses strong non-slip properties, and you can cut Tenura fabric to size with just a pair of scissors. It can also be washed with ease and is completely waterproof, meaning any spills and stains with food, drink, and many other liquids will not damage the fabric so that you can use it again and again. The fantastic qualities of Tenura anti-slip fabric make this material very useful for areas exposed to water.
Tenura non-slip fabric is available in 50.8cm x 182cm rolls and the following colours; white, black and beige.
Some mattresses seem to slide off bed bases, which can be a major inconvenience when getting in and out of bed, or changing the bed sheets, as this requires the mattress to be pushed or pulled back into place. Many mattresses are large and heavy, making them hard or impossible to manoeuvre.
For this issue, we have the answer.
Tenura non slip fabric can be placed underneath as a non slip mattress mat to help stop it sliding, by creating a non slip surface to prevent unwanted movement, helping enormously when trying to make the bed, as the mattress will stay still allowing you to work around it and without the hassle of it sliding from one side of the bed to the other.
Tenura non slip fabric is a soft and comfortable material. Commonly used in draws, cupboards or even as carpet underlay, this material allows objects to sink in slightly, creating a strong non slip grip around the object, making it a perfect fit for underneath a mattress. This material will help to stop all unwanted movement, and leave you with a comfy mattress and no problems, day or night!
We have non slip fabric in 3 neutral colours, beige, black and white. This will help you get the material which best suits you and will not stand out from the colours of your mattress/bed base, making the non slip material unnoticeable, while providing you with peace of mind.
We stock Tenura non slip fabric in pre-cut rolls of 50.8cm x 182cm, but larger sizes can be acquired.
For more information or advice on non slip fabric rolls, or any other product, feel free to contact us by email, phone or the contact us button on this site!
A new analysis conducted by the IAC (Independent Age Charity) and SSC (Strategic Society centre) has indicated that of the 2 million elderly people in England have difficulties with everyday tasks such as bathing, cooking and eating.
This is a major problem as these simple tasks are a necessity for many people. Many of Tenura’s products exist to tackle these exact problems. We created our cutlery grips and non abrasive anti slip bathroom stickers with these problems in mind, to help elderly, disabled or average people with everyday tasks making some tasks, which become harder with age less strenuous and stressful.
Slips and falls in a bath tub are a nightmare for any age group, but for those who are elderly and live on their own, it can be a real problem. Other solutions like bath mats can cause more problems than they solve, the mat can coil or lift, creating a lip that you could trip on, and this puts you in a position where a fall is a big possibility. Tenura thought about this problem for a long time, and decided that the best form of slip prevention in a bath or shower was one which would be stuck down permanently, with minimal raised edges, and could be cleaned easily. That way you don’t have the worry of the material becoming a trip hazard, and the issue of having to remove a mat every now and again to clean it, which can be a tedious task. This material is perfect for bare skin applications, as it is non-abrasive, meaning it will not damage bare skin, and will be comfortable underfoot.
Eating and cooking can be a real problem when you get older, as tasks which used to be simple can become a lot harder, such as opening jars and bottles. Even young and able-bodied people struggle to open jars and bottles. The pressure can sometimes be very high, so the lid or bottle cap is very tight. This makes opening the jar/bottle much harder, especially if you suffer from hand impairments such as arthritis or Parkinson’s disease.
This can be a big problem when this happens a large proportion of the time, as people cannot physically open something they may need to eat or drink. We understand the severity of this problem, and that’s why we created our grip enhancing bottle and jar openers, as they allow a better grip on the lids of jars and bottle tops, without having to exert too much force with your hands.
The elderly and people with hand impairments can find day to day tasks very difficult, and without the proper care or tools, they will continue to struggle. Tenura products offer a simple and cost effective solution to some of these problems, and we hope that they can help as much as possible,(source http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-30209059).
Wooden floors, they look amazing don’t they? I know most of you reading this now will have them somewhere in your homes, so do I, and I love it, but there is one problem, aside from things being dropped on it, is that it’s surface friction isn’t great when it comes in to contact with soft fibres, like socks, and, more importantly for the purpose of this post, rugs.
While kids love skidding about on wooden floors in their socks ( to be fair, so do I, even now at 29 ), people stood on rugs don’t, I don’t think at anytime while sliding on a rug, i’ve thought “hey, I feel like Aladdin!”.
We always love to go on about the versatility of our non slip fabric, it’s grippy, it’s cushiony…. you get the idea, it’s a great material to have around the house, and is extremely effective as rug underlay, so that once, albeit beautiful, but slippy rug, is now just a beautiful rug, and you can enjoy the feel of it under your feet without the fear that you may be going floor surfing.
Tenura non slip fabric offers a durable and effective to solution to the slipping rug problem as non slip rug underlay, just lay it down, throw your rug over the top and it will stay firm.
Right now, our non slip fabric has 25% off the RRP, making it even more cost effective to use as non slip rug underlay.
