Celebrating Strength and Independence: The Paralympic Winter Games
Today, March 6th, 2026, marks the start of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games — an inspiring showcase of determination, skill, and resilience. Athletes from around the world are demonstrating what’s possible when talent, innovation, and confidence come together.
The Paralympics are a celebration of ability, not limitation. They show that with the right support, people can achieve incredible things — on the slopes, on the ice, and in everyday life. At Tenura, we see the same principle in the home: independence is about empowering people to do what they love, comfortably and confidently.
Independence Through Innovation
Paralympic athletes rely on specially designed equipment — sit-skis, prosthetics, sledges, and adaptive poles — to compete at the highest level. These innovations allow them to turn challenges into achievements, combining skill, determination, and smart design.
Similarly, assistive products for daily life are small innovations that help people perform everyday tasks with confidence. Just as adaptive sports equipment enables athletes to excel, thoughtfully designed home aids empower people to maintain independence and enjoy daily activities fully.
Finding Joy in Every Action
One of the most uplifting aspects of the Paralympics is the sheer joy on display. Athletes celebrate every run down the slope, every goal on the ice, every turn on the snowboard. Their enthusiasm reminds us that independence isn’t just practical — it’s joyful.
In our homes, the same joy can be found when tasks feel easy, secure, and under control. A stable grip, a non-slip mat, or a simple assistive tool can transform an everyday activity into a moment of confidence and satisfaction.
Inspiration Beyond the Arena
The Paralympics show that independence is limitless when combined with determination and support. This message resonates beyond sport: whether someone is cooking, crafting, or exploring the outdoors, independence comes from knowing that tools and environments are designed with their abilities in mind.
Every Paralympic athlete exemplifies this. Their courage and creativity inspire millions to approach life with the same energy, adaptability, and positivity.
Uplifting Independence in Everyday Life
At Tenura, we celebrate independence through products that enhance grip, stability, and control. Simple adjustments in the home can empower people to live fully and confidently. When people feel capable, everyday life becomes more vibrant, engaging, and joyful.
Just as the Paralympians inspire the world on the slopes, so too can everyday independence inspire confidence and happiness at home. Every action completed confidently is a reminder that independence is possible, empowering, and uplifting.
Digital Literacy and the Elderly
As society accelerates into the digital age, a growing share of the population struggles to keep pace. Adults over 65 represent one of the fastest-growing demographics worldwide, yet surveys consistently show that many feel uncertain about basic online tasks. Approximately 77% to 93% of adults aged 65 and over own a smartphone as of 2024-2025, representing a dramatic increase in adoption. However, 46% report feeling uncomfortable navigating websites or apps, and nearly half avoid online services altogether due to fear of scams or confusion over interfaces. For these individuals, technology is a barrier to independence, safety, and meaningful connection.
The consequences of this digital gap are tangible. Telehealth services, which became essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, remain a primary mode of healthcare access for millions. Seniors unable to use these platforms may delay care, miss appointments, or fail to access critical resources, exacerbating health disparities. Financial independence is similarly threatened. As banking, utility management, and government services shift online, older adults without digital skills risk becoming dependent on family members or vulnerable to fraud. Social isolation, already a documented risk factor for depression and cognitive decline, is worsened when communication channels are limited to in-person interactions that may be infrequent. In essence, the digital divide is not an abstract problem—it is a structural barrier that affects well-being, autonomy, and safety.
The challenges seniors face with digital tools are well understood but often ignored in mainstream technology design. Many encounter devices that are unintuitive, cluttered, or physically difficult to use. Security concerns and the pervasive threat of online scams discourage engagement, while the lack of patient, structured instruction creates a cycle of avoidance and anxiety. Despite these obstacles, evidence demonstrates that with support, seniors can not only adopt technology but thrive with it. Programs such as Cyber-Seniors and Tech Life Unity, along with local community workshops, show significant improvements in confidence and skill when older learners are given instruction tailored to their pace and concerns. Intergenerational mentorship, where younger volunteers guide seniors, also proves effective, offering both technical guidance and social reinforcement.
Digital literacy for the elderly is not simply a matter of convenience; it is a question of independence, equity, and dignity. Many older adults do not know what questions to ask or where to begin, and without guidance, they risk being left behind in an increasingly connected world. Families and carers play a crucial role in bridging this gap by starting with what matters most to the individual: access to healthcare, communication with loved ones, financial management, and engagement with community resources. Learning becomes meaningful when it addresses these real-life needs rather than abstract technical skills. Education in this context must be patient, incremental, and supportive, allowing the elderly to practice new tasks repeatedly until confidence grows. Tools and devices should be chosen with accessibility in mind, including larger text, simplified interfaces, and voice-assisted functions, which reduce frustration and encourage experimentation. Beyond technical proficiency, they require guidance on safety and privacy practices, gradually learning to recognise scams, manage passwords, and navigate online interactions securely. Equally important is the social dimension of learning: intergenerational teaching, community workshops, and peer-led programs reinforce skills while fostering connection and reassurance, ensuring the elderly feel supported rather than isolated in their efforts. By translating technology into practical benefits—such as telehealth appointments, video calls with family, online bill management, or the digitisation of family memories—carers and families demonstrate the relevance of digital skills to daily life. Advocacy extends beyond the household as well, calling for public programs, inclusive design standards, and accessible resources that empower older adults to engage fully with the digital world. When education, support, and advocacy converge, they are not simply taught to use devices; they are equipped to navigate technology confidently, preserve autonomy, and maintain meaningful participation in modern society. Digital literacy, in this sense, is a matter of social responsibility, ensuring that the elderly are neither excluded nor disempowered but can access the tools they need to live with independence, security, and dignity.

Celebrating Disability Pride Month: Embracing Diversity, Empowering Lives
Disability Pride Month is an important time of the year dedicated to honouring the strength, resilience, and accomplishments of individuals with disabilities. It serves as a platform for raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, and fostering a sense of pride within the disability community. In this blog, we will delve into the significance of Disability Pride Month, explore the revised meaning behind each colour of the flag, discuss the importance of the grey background, and shed light on the origins of this empowering celebration.
The Colours of the Disability Pride Flag: The Disability Pride Flag consists of vibrant colours, each representing a meaningful aspect of the disability community. Let's explore the revised interpretation of the colours:
Green: The colour green now represents sensory disabilities, encompassing impairments related to sight, hearing, and other sensory functions. It acknowledges the diversity of sensory experiences within the disability community.
Blue: The colour blue now symbolises emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental health conditions and challenges related to emotional well-being. It highlights the importance of addressing mental health within the broader context of disability pride.
White: The colour white now stands for non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities. It represents conditions that may not be immediately apparent or easily understood, emphasising the significance of recognising and supporting individuals with these hidden disabilities.
Gold: The colour gold now represents neurodiversity, which encompasses conditions such as autism, ADHD, and other neurological differences. It celebrates the unique strengths and perspectives of individuals with neurodivergent identities.
Red: The colour red continues to symbolise physical disabilities, including mobility impairments and other conditions that affect physical function. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with visible disabilities and the importance of accessibility and inclusion.
The Grey Background: The grey background of the Disability Pride Flag holds significance within the revised interpretation. It represents the experiences of individuals who have passed away due to disabilities, as well as those whose disabilities may not be readily visible or diagnosed. It serves as a reminder to honour the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of all individuals with disabilities, irrespective of their visibility.
Origins and Significance of Disability Pride Month: Disability Pride Month finds its roots in the disability rights movement, which advocates for equal rights, access, and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. It was first established to coincide with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the United States. This legislation, signed into law on July 26, 1990, prohibits discrimination based on disability and has played a pivotal role in advancing disability rights globally.
Disability Pride Month is essential because it celebrates the achievements and strengths of individuals with disabilities while raising awareness about the challenges they face. It challenges societal stigmas, stereotypes, and ableism, fostering a sense of pride, self-acceptance, and empowerment within the disability community. The month-long celebration provides a platform for education, advocacy, and the promotion of accessibility, encouraging society to recognise and value the talents, contributions, and inherent worth of individuals with disabilities.
As Disability Pride Month unfolds, we are reminded of the extraordinary resilience, diversity, and contributions of individuals with disabilities. The Disability Pride Flag, with its revised colours and grey background, represents the spirit of this celebration, a celebration of strength, growth, passion, and joy. By embracing Disability Pride Month, we support the ongoing journey towards equality, accessibility, and inclusion for all. Let us join hands in celebrating and promoting the rights, accomplishments, and remarkable potential of individuals with disabilities.

Purple Tuesday 2021 & 10% Discount on Tenura Disability Aids
Some companies are taking up the Purple Tuesday initiative to make their company values align with the disabled community. This blog will outline how you can get involved and what Tenura is doing to ensure we provide inclusive customer service.
So, What’s Purple Tuesday All About
Fourteen million people in the UK live with a disability, equating to roughly 22% of the population. With that many people classified as having some form of disability, you’d think we would have better infrastructure as a nation to cope with the challenges the disabled community face.
We are excited to be taking part this year and joining in with over 5,000 organisations, pledging towards the Purple Tuesday campaign. Each organisation reflects inward to evaluate their customer service to make it a better experience for the disabled.
How Technology and Companies can Help
As technology and our understanding of disabilities continues to grow, the future for inclusivity is bright, which is precisely what Purple Tuesday is all about.
The technology push towards a more accessible customer experience is essential. It can start with ideas such as website accessibility, voice recognition devices, and providing different channels disabled customers can access your services. Companies coming up with technology advancements in the name of disability inclusion are fantastic, as all these changes can vastly improve a disabled person’s experience with your company.
Companies can make changes offline too, which includes; training staff helping them to communicate with disabled people, installing wheelchair ramps, and creating clear signage.
If you are a company that wants to join in on the Purple Tuesday campaign, you can via their website, you need to register, then pledge a commitment that will benefit disabled people using your company. Put your ideas into action and deliver on your goals, so you can celebrate your achievements when it comes to 2nd November.
How You Can Help
Those of you speaking out on social media, informing others about businesses stepping in the right direction and making those positive-discrimination steps is impactful. Helping companies recognise ways they can improve accessibility helps create the market pull, pulling companies in line with the values of the disabled community and beyond.
You can use the following hashtags to join in on the conversation:
- #PT2021
- #PurpleTuesday2021
- #DisabilityInclusion
- #AccessibilityForAll
Tenura’s Pledge to Purple Tuesday
We aim to provide a better user experience for disabled people using the Tenura website. We want to be inclusive, and with products aimed at those who are disabled, it seems like a step in the right direction.
One step we have taken to reach our goal of a more inclusive website is a website audit. The website audit picks up areas where we can make our website accessible. We will be implementing these ideas in the coming years, as we have big plans, ranging from image naming formulas that aid those using screen readers to releasing a guide on website accessibility in the form of a blog. We started our strategy last year and have been making small manageable steps towards our goal ever since. As I am sure you appreciate, these adaptations take both time and money.
To further help us towards our website accessibility goal, please send an email informing us of any website accessibility techniques you feel we could implement.

We want to show our appreciation to the community pledging towards a better future by offering you a 10% discount on all Tenura products via our website. Use the discount code PURPLETUES10 at checkout to redeem.
This promotion is running from 26/10/21 to 16/11/21.
World OT Day 2021 + Free Occupational Therapy Gift
Initially, this observance day was known as WFOT Occupational Therapy International Day, until 2010 when it was renamed Occupation Therapy Day/World OT Day. The observation day became official and globally recognised in 2010.
The organisation behind OT day is the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, WFOT, which provides a supportive community for occupational therapists globally with over 100 organisations and 580,000 occupational therapists in their membership program. Their key goals are to provide a "global voice for occupational therapists" and "set the standards" for OT practices. They want to educate their members with the latest industry news and techniques, delivering this via their approved education programmes.
The World Federation of Occupational Therapists is pushing the focus this year on displaced persons and marginalised communities and how best to support them as occupational therapists.
This crucial topic is at the forefront of people's minds following shifts in the socioenvironmental climate following the recent events and those seeking refuge from Afghanistan.
World OT Day 2021 Theme
This year's World OT Day theme is "Belong. Be you.", which lends itself to their latest initiative. They are releasing content regarding diversity, adversity and inclusion, and how we can work together to improve community relations and resilience. We all come across struggles in daily life. Some people in our local and global communities have a more challenging time overcoming adversity, recently highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement and the scenes in Kabul following the evacuation of troops in Afghanistan.
For some readers, you may be unaware of the essential work that occupational therapists do, especially concerning the above. Still, this blog will demonstrate how vital their role is in our communities and why we need to show our support.
Occupational therapists can help those living in crisis or transitioning to a new location after seeking asylum. They can utilise socio-political occupational therapy techniques to help patients further. They can help by giving a person structure to their daily lives to provide a sense of normalcy. Their work improves the patient's mental health and integration into their new local communities. Integration is paramount and can be acquired through education and bridging the gap between cultural differences. These techniques aim to develop the patient's independence.
As you can imagine, moving to a new area or even country, things can vary, from the types of food to the typical clothing fashions. It was not a choice for displaced humans to move, and the migration was involuntary or even coerced. These people could be fleeing persecution, war/conflict and violations of their human rights. So, understanding culture is beneficial for all parties involved, especially as there may be a language barrier in the initial move.
If you are an OT and want to improve your knowledge surrounding this years theme, there are two free courses available from the World Federation of Occupational Therapists website:
- WFOT Disaster Management for Occupational Therapists
- Occupational Therapy: Working with Displaced Persons
Get Involved in World OT Day 2021
You can be involved in World OT Day via the #WorldOTDay hashtag, post a picture of you celebrating at your practice and help spread awareness. They also have some social media images and other content
you can use to help promote World OT Day via their website.
Other hashtags you can use include:
- #WorldOccupationalTherapyDay
- #OccupationalTherapyDay
- #WFOTOccupationalTherapyInternationalDay
The WFOT has partnered with PromOTing Occupational Therapy. Their theme is to "Pay it Forward", calling Occupational Therapist practitioners and students globally to volunteer some of their time to help make a difference in the world. They have also made a map detailing the countries that have taken part over the years.

New Tenura Video: Children's Assistive Devices
Tenura creates and manufactures helpful assistive devices for children to make life a little simpler. Tenura's ergonomically designed children's products are beneficial during play and mealtimes. The three gadgets on show in the video are Tenura children's cutlery grips, CupCaps and non-slip mats. You can use these products to promote the development of fine motor skills like handwriting.
Skills such as handwriting and properly using cutlery, may not seem necessary. However, they are the foundation to key life skills, and by using and practising with cutlery, the child's brain develops fine motor skills.
Fine motor skills are the movements we make using our smaller muscles for intricate tasks, a task in our daily lives that requires such skill is fastening the buttons on your top, tying shoelaces, writing and correctly using cutlery.
Children who do not practice fine motor skills often have low self-esteem because they are unable to complete the same tasks as their peers. So, let's make sure your child is happy and prepared for life by encouraging their development using Tenura children's products.
Explore the benefits of our Children's Range:
Children's Cutlery Grips
Children can struggle to hold items with thin handles as it requires fine motor skills and coordination. Typically, children can feed themselves by age seven, having acquired these skills through years of practice. You may not give it much thought but grasping smaller objects requires a more extensive range of movement, which is why some children struggle to hold cutlery. To help your child, slide Tenura children's cutlery grips onto handles, enlarging their surface area and making them more comfortable to hold. Some great examples include:
- Toothbrushes
- Paintbrushes
- Pens and Pencils
- Hairbrushes
Children's cutlery grips come in a pack of two and are available in three colours, red, blue and grey.
For larger hands, we have ergonomically designed adult cutlery grips.

Children's Table Mats
Arts and crafts are a treasured pastime for all children, often consisting of paint, pens and glue, all of which can leave horrifying marks on your furniture. However, by using a Tenura children's mat as a barrier between the table and their art, you can protect your surfaces and keep the mess contained. Tenura mats are easy to wash/wipe down and are dishwasher safe.
The mat's silicone non-slip properties prevent spillages, as paint pots and other mess-making supplies are securely held in place by the children's mat.
There are two funky shaped children's mats available, an orange cat and a green frog.
Tenura CupCaps – Silicone Drink Lids
We are all prone to knocking over drinks, especially children, whose bodies are growing and don't have the best spatial awareness. With that in mind, CupCaps can be an ideal help. CupCaps are stretchy silicone drink lids that create a seal over the top of containers to keep the liquid inside and avoid spillages. Stretch the drinks cap over your cup, insert a straw through the eyelet and away you go, mess-free.
Benefits of Tenura Children's Assistive Devices
Tenura’s three assistive devices for children are made from silicone, which means that have fantastic qualities, which include:
- Non-Toxic
- An essential feature as children tend to put things in their mouth, so the last thing you want is the object to be toxic
- Antimicrobial
- Bacteria can't harbour on the mat's surface. Your child has a developing immune system, so it is crucial to reduce the risk of infection/illness
- Latex-Free
- Your child could be allergic to latex, and you may not be aware
- Easy to hand wash and dishwasher safe
- Tenura children's products can withstand temperatures up to 250°C
If you would like to contact us regarding the Tenura children's range or our other products, please fill out the contact form.

Developing Fine Motor Skills in Children
Performing actions with increased frequency positively affects how smooth, fast and accurate the motion can be completed in the future, becoming ingrained in 'muscle memory'.
As for a child learning how to write, years of practice go by to develop the skill. If you have ever tried to practice the art form, calligraphy, you will realise what it was like when first beginning writing. You have to train your hand to complete the same motion each time ensuring every letter is identical in style. You have to train your body to make those exact motions.
By repetitively completing actions, you also build up the strength in the muscles involved in that movement, especially supportive muscles required for fine motor skills. As these improvements continue, the brain takes note and sends out altered signals each time, which is, of course, why practice makes perfect.
To help develop this skill in your children, you should practice activities such as colouring/drawing, tracing, cutting, writing, playing with playdough and using cutlery when eating.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities + Discount Code 2020
In 1992 the United Nations started the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. An observance day that gives us the opportunity worldwide to reflect and raise awareness of public health and ethical issues surrounding disabilities. On the 3rd of December, the world will come together to support this cause.
In the UK alone, 13.9 million people have a form of disability which equates to 22% of the UK population. In support of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we have hand-selected some Tenura products that are of great value to those with a disability, and we are offering a 10% discount code you can redeem on these items.
An International Picture of People with Disabilities
Over 1 billion people worldwide have a disability, which is roughly 15% of the world's population.
In the UK, many of us have access to fantastic healthcare systems such as the NHS, but take a moment to think of the struggles a disability can have on a person in the developing world. We need to make sure that everyone has access to the help and healthcare they need.
Types of Disabilities and the Community
Another interesting point regarding disabilities is that there are many different types, with some affecting your cognitive behaviour, mental wellbeing or physical form.
Body dysmorphia has had substantial coverage in the news due to social media being a massive influence on our younger generation-this condition is a mental disability but can take a very physical form too. Our middle-aged population are currently feeling the effects of a high-calorie diet, which leads to many health implications. People in their later stages of life are often living with conditions such as dementia and heart disease. Adapting to a disability you weren't born with can be hard to overcome, taking serious will-power and a robust support system.
Disabilities are everywhere in life and can affect any age, which is why it is essential to be mindful and supportive. So join us in raising awareness this International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Many things are connecting this community of people, and it's beyond any one condition. As many of us are affected by disabilities daily, we may not have a disability ourselves, but perhaps a family member, friend, or work colleague might. It is also a day to reflect on the hard work young carers in our community complete daily, doing their best to support their parents, it's almost inconceivable what they go through without any recognition.
We hear in the news, now, more than ever, that a disability is not always visible, which is why we should treat everyone with respect.

Education and the Disabled – Employment and the Disabled
The education system in England is one of the best in the world, we lookout for early signs of learning disabilities such as dyslexia (problems with reading, spelling and other language processing skills), dyspraxia (movement and coordination, language and speech) and ADHD (issues with paying attention, controlling behaviour and hyperactivity).
Education could be affected by a disability which later down the line could affect employability. Therefore, we must learn more about disabilities and adapt our schooling system to be as inclusive as possible.
Tenura Products can be Helpful to Those living with a Disability.
Visual Aids for the Disabled – Tenura Non-Slip Mats
Tenura's silicone range comes in three bright colours and can be helpful visual aids for the disabled.
Red can signal heat or danger, so by placing a Tenura red non-slip mat in the kitchen, it can indicate that objects placed on its surface may be hot. By having that signal, a person can avoid touching the pan and prevent burns or other injuries. Of course, for a disabled person, an accident like a burn can affect their world differently. One disabled person may be unable to compute what's happened while another may not have felt the heat at all, and the burn goes untreated. There are many disabilities and many ways to help, with one being visual aids. This example demonstrates why it's super important to have visual aids and other disability aids around the home.
Tenura silicone non-slip mats are available in three bright colours-red, blue and yellow.
Bathing Aids – Tenura Non-Slip Bath Stickers
Dip your toe in the water of Tenura products with our most popular aid, Tenura non-slip bath stickers. Baths are notoriously slippery. To avoid injury, you can apply Tenura bath stickers. They help build confidence, and positively promote personal hygiene as the idea of a bath or shower is no longer as daunting knowing there's a bathing aid to help.
Bespoke Aids to Help in any Situation – Tenura Silicone Grip Strips and Grip Rolls
You can claim your 10% discount code off Tenura grip strips and rolls. You can create bespoke household aids as we see many customer wrapping strips of the grip roll around handles to make them easier and more comfortable to hold.
A disability often helped by Tenura grip roll is arthritis or other hand mobility impairment due to their decreased dexterity.
Tenura Jar and Bottle Openers
We all struggle to open jars and bottles. However, there is a solution, Tenura jar and bottle openers. Using these gadgets puts less strain on muscles and joints, which is vital for those living with conditions such as arthritis or other such hand deformity. This simple cooking aid can help to make one of the small daily tasks easier for a disabled person.
Tenura Non-Slip Fabric
Another adaptable aid is the Tenura non-slip fabric which can be cut down to size and fitted to the area you want to add non-slip qualities. Our customers have lined bookshelves and cupboards with Tenura non-slip fabric as it protects the surface and the objects that reside on it.
The Future of Disabilities
In recent years, we have come so far with the way we can diagnose, treat and care for those with disabilities, but we still have not reached the pinnacle. As science experiments continue, and so does the hard work of the care keyworkers, we can all help to achieve and understand better than we have before.
Don't forget to claim your 10% discount code, IDPD20 at checkout.
There is so much to say on the topic of disabilities, and we can't cover it all in one blog. But you can join the conversation over on social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
